After watching “Upside Down: The Creation Records Story” for a second time this past week, I became a bit peeved at the documentary’s focus. It invests too much time in portraying the label as partying tastemakers who were consumed by Kingmaking. Certainly, Alan McGee and Co. fostered their fair share of critically/commercially successful bands — namely Oasis, The House of Love, Primal Scream, Ride, and My Bloody Valentine. But the label that helped to birth the C86, indie pop, shoegaze, and Britpop scenes also had a stable of highly influential (if less-appreciated by the masses) artists, so many of whom the documentary glossed over or outright ignored for whatever reason. In response, here’s a two-part series on Creation that sheds equal light on the bands the documentary failed to fully explore. And yes, if you’re keeping score at home, I did create a two-part Creation Records playlist that does NOT include Oasis. I figure you’ve already heard them once or twice.
